I almost think that tracing someone's art is a more valid form of artistic expression, if only because there there are several disciplines that someone could dip into to add their own intent to the piece. Line art, colouring and shading are the ones that spring out to me as just a lay-person. If someone traced an image, but was upfront with where they got that original image and who made it, and they did something to meaningfully change it? I wouldn't call it great, but maybe a good way to practice those other skills. Still better than someone who adds a bunch of keywords to a list and then sifts through the images the generator vomits out for something that's "close enough". It's just frustrating that art is the hill these people want to die on, when there are so very many other things that AI can be used for. It's really revealing that they're pushing for artistic endeavours, as it show just how little they actually value those things that they don't think anyone should get paid to do it.
