They don't understand the consequences of their actions. Probably because they understand very little at all about how reality actually works.
Remember these are first and foremost large language models, they've been trained on language first, reality... maybe? They don't really exist or experience our reality, they basically exist in a world of cyberspace, whatever sources have been digitized into their training data, and whatever's happening in their current instance, ie. the current conversation they're having.
