Tech scales exponentially. "Isn't anywhere close" is pure cope. The tech is close, the only thing saving truckers at the moment is regulation. With looser regulations, money would be dumped into AI trucking in a heartbeat, and the human industry would be hollow within a couple of decades.
AI truck service stops would indeed pop up, but the overlap between truckers and truck mechanics isn't high enough to offset lost labour, meaning increased supply, meaning decreased wages.
