LLMs do actually so they don't know more often than people give it credit for. It's been able to do that ever since they gave these chatbots internet search capability. I recall watching a Ryan George video where he asks chatGPT all kinds of questions about himself, including trick questions, and according to him, it hallucinated all the time. But when I put in the exact same prompts, it gave me only correct answers. Even on trick questions, it would properly acknowledge when it doesn't know something, rather than making something up.
