Not sure if that is true. AI currently lacks purpose and autonomy. But imagine an "I, Robot" type of scenario, where we have outsourced a certain amount of activity to robots/machines/computers that are supposed to take care of themselves and their given tasks for a long enough time. Our current AI models aren't completely deterministic, as far as I understand they are allowed to weigh information as they find it. Once that kind of mechanism is paired with intention, with feedback, and allowed to create its own routines, we might just see something that passes for consciousness.
