Exactly dude. This smells of a PR stunt by Google cuz even though he's being critical of Google on their ethical treatment of AI, it's based on the assumption that they HAVE created, or are close to creating, a 'sentient' AI. It makes their AI research look really good and cutting edge and promotes their tech to the world.
