@curtismeme Solid points. You’re right that AI doesn’t copy in a literal, rote, one-to-one way. AI trains on patterns statistically and generates from that, which is where my borrowed metaphor fell short. But to say it doesn’t copy at all sidesteps the fact it watches from billions of examples, absorbs the architecture, and then recombines them within protocol. Yeah, it’s not using a word-to-word recipe but what you described in your reply, and I just now, is a process of sophisticated copying. Now, trial and error by itself isn’t creativity. And randomness certainly isn’t. Just throwing things together unpredictably isn’t the same as making something new that’s actually meaningful. You know, something with intention and purposeful novelty. Something that can create new conceptual categories. These are features of creativity, as I see it. The gap between feeling a slap and the creation of music from that slap requires a framework of emotion, music and intentionality. So that’s what I mean by having synthesis, understanding, and being a “chef”. So when I used the chef vs. cook metaphor, I am not trying to say AI is dumb or mechanical, but to get at the idea that creativity isn’t just recombining ingredients. It’s about knowing why something works, and being able to invent based on synthesis and intent. Tbh, now I think the metaphor doesn’t go far enough. But idk what could replace it right now.
