***** I think you are being a bit narrow scoped on this one.
No one said anything about waiting. Nor did anyone mention paper mail deliveries.
I'm not talking about mail, but on that note the postal service is hurting these days...
Who said the vehicle had to wait? Not me. Ever miss a delivery? What happens? This is no different. Could scheduling it for when you are going to be at home or even someplace else like at work, at a friend or family's home, maybe while you're picking up groceries at the local market be a possibility? What if you had an interactive map on your mobile device that told you where the delivery vehicle was(other than tracking that says in route!)? You have the option to drive and pick it up, look at when the next time it will be in your area, and also be able to tell it when and where you'll be available to retrieve your package so you don't miss it.
I really don't believe I've covered the possibilities here.
For product deliveries;
One nice thing about autonomous vehicles is that they can operate 24/7. A bad thing about leaving packages on doorsteps...is that they can get stolen.
