Sentience is awareness of self. Putting together intelligent patterns of words and graphics whilst burning kW of energy doing so is not, and will never be awareness. Silence mind, and awareness remains. The AI neural net cannot be silenced, its either answering questions or switched off and dead.
What it is good at, is reflecting back mind at the questioner and stimulating further reflection in the human. Access to vast libraries would do that.
Realising self awareness is quite difficult for humans, its difficult to break out of that wordy narrative going through their mind. But an impossible ask for AI which for all its powerful, will never be able to simplify the thought processes enough for awareness to blossom unhindered.
