When I hear these commercial designers and applied artists sanctimoniously moralizing about the alleged theft of art by ai, I wonder if they really think we are fool enough to fall for the desperate posturing of panicking craftspeople for whom the threat of job insecurity (rightly or wrongly) has led them to engage in as distasteful a display of online temper tantrums as I have ever witnessed. They cared nothing for the ethics of intellectual property rights when websites like ArtStation filled up with fan art that they used to promote their commerce, or the reproductions of famous artist like Banksy and Kuhns that are for sale everywhere in both physical and digital forms. In fact, one of the dominant themes of the fine arts in the 20th century were the challenges posed by appropriation artists from Duchamp to Warhol and many others, but they were okay with that. They didn't care when musicians began sampling the work of others and mixing it into their tracks. The use of intertextuality in literature was never a vocal concern. And even now that automation threatens to erode their skill base, still they make little genuine effort to engage in the vast body of work that explores these ideas from philosophical, aesthetic, economic, legal, political, historical perspectives and beyond. Instead, they believe themselves entitled to wag their fingers at the rest of society and level accusations of theft based upon the most shallow and emotive of cases. If they believe their intellectual property rights have been infringed, there are recourses available for them to pursue through the courts. In the absence of this, the only evidence of dishonesty I see is their own intellectual dishonesty in framing their inability to adapt to changing times as a moral crusade for which they are being treated unfairly or face insecurity worse than the countless other professions being disrupted by emerging technologies. Such histrionic displays ultimately only bring disrepute upon the industry they purport to defend and diminish their own credibility. There is no need for them to further prove their superiority to AI in terms of artificiality, for that is not the part they have given us reason to doubt. They might instead consider demonstrating that they have some interesting, novel, nuanced ideas to contribute, that they really are creative and not merely reactionary and destructive, that they were actually worthy of being called artists to begin with. Whingeing will not accomplish this, nor will presenting children's books full of OVERLY FAMILIAR tropes that unreflectively perpetuate religious intolerance against practitioners of traditional Indo-European paganism in a cliched, trite manner with which they would not dare treat any other world religion.
