Software engineer here, Everyone calm down, LLM chatbots like chatGPT and its variants are not sentient, conscious, or thinking. It's a grand illusion of prediction algorithms. Using petabytes of data collected from the Internet, LLMs are able to find patterns in all human languages and make predictions on what the next thing will be. It's just an extremely sophisticated preeictive text. It's more akin to a compression algorithm than actual intelligence. Don't believe me? Just a few months ago you could ask it "how many Rs in the word 'strawberry' and no matter what it will insist there's 3 Rs. This is something a child could answer. They've since added custom code to deal with the strawberry problem. But that's just one peek behind the magic trick. It is not actually aware because it isn't thinking, it's just a statistical model that makes predictions in patterns of text. It's a neat trick, and it had me fooled at first. But if you play around with it long enough you can get it to screw up something stupidly obvious. So, alan turing can still rest easy.
