She wasn't replaced by AI. She was replaced by a scummy so-called friend who had been exhibiting predatory and opportunist behavior from the beginning. But if her "friend" couldn't pay her, and never paid her in the past, looks to me like her friend did her a favor. That relationship needed severed.
