How about, instead of a basic income covering basic needs... We just have the government run and automate basic needs making it free to use. That way the government actually provides something to us instead of all the shenanigans it provides now. So, it would de-privatize and operate:
-Food/drink
-Housing
-Utilities
-Infrastructure
-Education
-healthcare
And since no one can work and earn money to pay tax, EXCEPT THE BILLIONAIRES... They'll pay for it =)
Another nice side effect with this method is, people can't abuse it as easily. Taking their basic income and buy drugs, gamble or do other dumb things. Instead, they don't get money. But they can get the essentials for free. And if they want money to get all the extras and luxuries, like a gigantic TV, luxurious vacations, gaming PC or fancy brand clothing. They'll have to work to earn some extras.
It also leaves space for private companies to operate besides the government. Worked hard and want a luxurious mansion? These can be made and provided by private companies. Lamborghini? Private. Luxurious lobster? Private. Etc. The government would just provide entry level goods.
