The problem isn't that layoffs won't happen with AI, because they will, but the tech industry has been more aggressive with its layoffs without trial and errors on AI use.
Layoffs are always going to happen as AI advances and eventually more so with robotics, but the aggressive approach to layoffs to save money wasn't the smartest move to do and it would have been better for them to do a gradual approach as the tech matures and it's been tested to see that it works well enough.
Regardless of this, we are going to see mass layoffs over the long run thanks to AI, regardless of the small hurdles thrown in the way, and it's going to get far worse once AI is tied into the physical world with robotics, at the moment, we are still in the early testing phase of AI, eventually it's going to lead to an avalanche as the cost and productivity of AI would make it insane, that not using it would put a business at a competitive disadvantage compared to the ones that use it.
