There's some I would say incorrect assumptions here. "Apology requires genuine feeling of wrongdoing" - which is not true. A genuine apology does require that, sure, but apologies can be not genuine. And on top of that, in general language is... interesting. English is not my native language, and I have used some phrases in conversations before without knowing their actual meaning - I kinda understood the common context they are used on, and inferred the meaning, albeit wrongly. "I am sorry" is not one of these of course, but hypothetically if it was, I could have possibly used it in a way that was misleading, but I don't know if it's accurate to say that I lied in that case.
ChatGPT even clarified what and why is it using those phrases, so I don't know if I'd say it's a 'gotcha' moment for a consciousness.
