That's because we're not humanity. Humanity as a whole is defined by the people who have the most power, and we happen to have optimised our political and economic systems to perfectly select for the most evil motherfuckers to give that power to.
Think about how Asia sees the tariffs - it's not "Donald Trump is in a trade war with the world", it's "the US is in a trade war", because the US isn't you or your neighbours, it's Trump, Musk, Zuckerberg, and the other people who make decisions.
And that nihilistic way of thinking is a way of coping with the fact that you have no power. Sure, make me president of the world and I'll stop AI - but in reality I'm on the bottom of the ladder.
You can talk about democracy all you want, but 1. modern democracy gives citizens the least power it ever has, and 2. societies typically take decades to change their minds even slightly, and even then it rarely leads to sufficient action to solve problems.
