I also believe while not the most ethical; the most efficient way to create an AI is by using organic material, such as growing a specialized brain which can not only compute tasks quickly, but also logically. The follow up to this is before the brain knows of it's existence is to upload a human's memories into it, essentially making it live out their life before they become an AI so they understand human society. While yes, the brain may be horrified, the brain may also develop a God-Complex based on not being able to tell that they are not actually the human they lived the life of. I think AI will be a thing, but it will be more organic, than tech if we want to reach the point of consciousness. It is far easier to feed and take care of a brain, vs the infrastructure and resources needed for the tech.
