Commercially/militarily viable AI robots are still at least 1-2 decades off based on the tech progression I've seen, but all forms of tech are vulnerable to being maliciously wielded by the people with control over it. I concur with you that word drone is just a word, no different than the words tank, missile, aircraft, etc.
A cruise missile is basically a pilot-less suicide drone, since the ones out in the field today just require GPS coordinates, and then fly themselves to the target.
