I am a disabled and chronically ill professional artist and frankly the argument that AI art is more accessible for people like me is BS. In fact it actively harms me as a disabled person. Because of my various conditions, holding down a regular job is virtually impossible for me. I need flexible work hours, I need to be able to work from home a lot. I need to be able to rest, take breaks, take medication, eat etc. whenever my body requires it and most regular jobs in my area are just not suitable for all of my health needs. But by being self-employed as an artist, I can have the flexibility I need for my health without worrying about losing my job. I also don't need any particular qualifications or work experience to start working. Education and training can be a barrier for some disabled folk for a number of reasons, and for those who can't afford it as well, but there are many types of art jobs out there that are still accessible without these things. I didn't need an expensive degree to get contracted for my most recent projects, I just needed a good pitch and the art skills that I have improved with practice over the course of my lifetime. I love learning new skills by following creators I admire and reading about their art tips on their blogs, watching free youtube videos, and interacting with my other artist friends. I use a busted up second-hand tablet most of the time, and while I now use some tools and software that cost more money as well, when I first started drawing as a kid I used cheap pencils and the backs of old letters that my parents got in the mail. My first digital drawings were done on microsoft paint on my dad's computer using just a mouse nearly 20 years ago. If I wanted to even now I could still draw professionally using extremely cheap or free tools, and I know many artists who do exactly that. There are also a ton of free resources out there on the internet and in books in libraries on learning different art skills, and plenty of cheap second-hand books, tools, and art materials you can find if you look around. Disability and financial situation are just not good reasons to use a system that steals and competes with real artist's hard work and livelihoods. If you actually care about disabled people and poor people (which almost all the artists I am friends with are) then you would support disabled and struggling artists and avoid AI like the plague.
