This is crazy to me. I'm a Colorado resident (and artist) and I went to the Colorado State fair that year and saw that piece hanging up in the gallery and was like "wow that's incredible, I've never seen anything like it". Imagine my dismay when I found out it was AI generated. Crazy to think this guy is basically my neighbor and I saw this piece before the story broke out.
