as an artist, while I certainly feel a bit concerned about these ai generators taking my job so I can understand the upset, I also feel like it's not my place to tell people they can't do that. I do agree that if they want to use a living artist in their image sets, especially the ability, as you say, to prompt the ai with the artists name, the artists should get some royalties from that, or at the very least consent, if they're dead, fair enough to use them. the fact that these algorithms are being created in a way that leverages the academic fair use to use any images and later commercialises it I think is definitely a problem, not just for artists, but it threatens the place of academic fair use which is an exceedingly important principle. I can see millions of artists opting into such a royalty system, even if it's a tiny amount, particularly traditional artists whom it wouldn't affect at all.
