It seems to me that a better approach would be to have a remote driver. That is, use some of the auto-driving technology (cameras, sensors, etc) to allow trucks to be driven remotely. That keeps a human driver in the loop who will be better able to react to all the millions of variations of weather, road conditions, crazy auto drivers etc. But they can do it from a fixed location--maybe even from their own homes. so little or no commute. This would allow increasing through put since a driver who reaches his time limit can hand off to another driver with minimal lost time. The drivers don't have to worry about having to dead head or having to stay overnight in a hotel a thousand miles from home. And the same number of drivers would be employed which is a significant societal issue (but not an issue for the trucking companies and companies selling the self driving systems).
Does this seem reasonable?
