LIDAR is not a reliable technology. It's not the part where the human lights it off and it takes a couple of million shots in a second. That's repeatable. It's the computer program that "knows" how to connect
- all those dots into a surface model of triangles. I've seen LIDAR connect the tops of a half mile of 60' eucalyptus trees with a parallel ridge line that was 500 feet away and a hundred feet higher. that was a lot of dirt that wasn't really there. NO office "engineer" checked it for reasonableness, and they massively fucked up the import/export balance of the dirt so that nearly the whole job needed to be re-designed to lower elevations.
- existing pipe in refineries and chemical plants. LIDAR will connect one pope to a different pipe when one passes behind an obstacle. A careful human would catch this in plan checking, or when taking topo by real methods. But knowledgeable humans, and plan checking, are expensive. Lots of pipe is bought, fabricated, installed, and then ripped out and recycled because of this combination Lie-Dar/cheapness problem.
