First the praise...with your current work, your depth, and breadth of knowledge and strong critical thinking skills as well as your clear understanding of politics and economics, you should aspire to be this eras Noam Chomsky.
Regarding the video...I agree almost entirely with your description of where things stand atm.
My only counter argument would be that by definition, whichever nation state creates ASI (and maybe AGI) first, will have the ability to degrade the opposing parties ability to achieve the same goal; attacking AI companies, national infrastructure, military assets etc. In this scenario we're talking about ASI powerful enough to be an existential threat and therefore presumably capable of hacking systems protected by strong encryption (elliptic curve, etc).
As such, the argument (albeit xenophobic and not 100% sincere) would be that developing ASI first is the same as being the only nation state to have ASI. Now we don't necessarily trust Altman, Musk et al. but as a nation, Americans (politicians and citizens) certainly trust their Chinese counterparts much less.
The idea is they'd rather our b@atards develop the technology, use it to hinder the Chinese, and at least America can both benefit and police it (hubris) going forward.
