The computer seems sentient because of the enormous complexity of its neural network. The conscious part of the human mind cannot fathom that. Yet the unconscious human mind works the same way. So the 'wow' response to this revelation is actually not that the computer is sentient, but that we see we are an AI ourselves, and its sentience a social construct. We want to feel special and human but there's simply an intelligence operating through us in a world that we have made to believe is real. It all SEEMS sentient and real, but it isn't. So indeed, this is not the question. The real challenge is that companies developing the AI need to be both excited and responsible for worst-case scenarios. I mean, I'm sure tigers and elephants were exciting too in the Roman empire. But before using them, there's a lot of do's and don'ts to know about.
