uninspired cash grab is right. I was into cryptocurrency with bitcoin back in 2010 and generative AI with StyleGAN and weirdly got out of both before the popularity hit them. I just noticed that the promise wasn't being delivered with cryptocurrency, and when exchanges were being created they were all just normal companies and it was all just a glorified laundering scheme. With generative AI I noticed that the training data was just everything everyone has made and browsing the latent space you could arrive to points of blatant plagiarism. I fine-tuned a NASA space image StyleGAN model with microscope slides of minerals off of wikimedia (creative commons license) back in 2021. Haven't messed with it since StyleGAN and not interested because all these megacorporations basically just get to pirate and steal everything with impunity and then want to pack it into something to re-sell to people, and I think that's disgusting, and I got to that conclusion before ChatGPT was even released. I feel like if you actually care about the ethics of software then it's pretty easy to disapprove of these things, especially if you are into tech. And now I get to have the wonderful experience of people trying to lecture me about these things when they didn't give a single f*** about any of this stuff until they thought they could make a bunch of money.
