David's attempt to calm worries by saying that even the poorest have homes and food compared to 250 years ago is wholly disingenuous OR callously unthinking, even if only talking about the US rather than globally. You would expect that with the advancement of democratic civilisation, civil society and all our other capabilities to enact compassion that almost irrespective of the individual technologies deployed we would all be in a better place. To gloss over the fact that millions will lose access to full time work with an employer that is sufficiently remunerative to house and raise a family in the US economy, let alone any other more progressive one where the social welfare nets are far more supportive (yet still considered insufficient due to the subversion of the residential property markets, energy markets, public transport, etc), is also failing to be truly insightful. Claiming those Tech bros who are demanding we speed headlong into the abyss aren't evil is also completely unconscionable, because they have patently been running their businesses to the detriment of global society for decades and their patter and actions to inflict their versions of AI on us are also clearly grossly irresponsible. There's criminally negligent or fraudulent incompetence and then there are willful, intentional acts of dangerously irresponsible and harmful form knowingly affecting a mulitude of victims across the planet that are by definition EVIL. The only real "care" they apply is that mandated by laws that they cannot find ways to circumvent, look at how they have tried to excuse their profligate data harvesting, the parasitic harvesting of "old" media content, their refusal to properly prevent the willful abuse of their platforms and tools to harm identifiable individuals and groups, and so on.
