The hard sci-fi novel Blindsight by Peter Watts has a good chapter about how difficult it is to accept you’re talking to a “Chinese Room” when an alien craft starts chatting with them using self-awareness, humor and anger (after eavesdropping on human comms for some time). It’s 20 years old but very relevant today. The whole book is about consciousness/sentience and how those qualities are not necessary for intelligence and may actually impede higher evolution. It’s not really for/against AI but brings up questions about why we value our imperfect “humanness” and are biased about our way of thinking, or the value of “thinking” at all.
