My background is psychology, and I've reached the same conclusion as you, though tunneling in from a different entrance point. It is going to take some extremely compelling evidence to persuade me that something that has no life, no evolutionary lineage, no biology, no genuine affectivity, no genes, no instincts, can be conscious– and there can be no genuine thinking, reasoning, or understanding without consciousness. What's happening with AI reminds me of when human beings used to enchant, or animate, nature with spirits – we are animating machines with spirits. Mechanical animism: We are projecting pieces of our own human nature into these lifeless machines; we are even designing them in our own image.
At one point in this episode, Neil turns AI into a kind of malevolent genie. It's absolutely ridiculous.
In the imagination of modern humanity, AI is kind of like a magical spirit that animates the machine.
