I don’t get why people keep saying “schools lag behind industry”. What industry? When are you going to use assembly at work? That’s not really the point. I guess from the perspective of a front end dev I might agree. We’re using javafx for example. But the point is not to be proficient in javafx - I’m never going to use javafx ever in my life when I’m finished with uni. The point is to be able to read documentation and understand how UI’s are built. Sure, you have different languages, different UI frameworks, but at the end of the day they’re just doing the same thing in different ways.
The purpose of CS is not to learn programming - the purpose is to understand programming (and computers/networking in general). All from transistor level logic to using AI libraries with python. The difference between someone who’s done a react bootcamp and someone with a CS undergraduate degree should be that one won’t freak out if I ask them to create something in a language/framework they’ve never used before. When I look at website written in react I know how I could’ve made it using just JavaScript. Sure it would be a pain in the ass to write in pure JS, but if you could write it in JS you could write it in VUE given you take like 2 hours reading the docs and are willing to make mistakes and learn the frameworks quarks.
Idk, to me the greatest sin in CS is thinking anything is “magic”. At the end of the day everything just translates to assembly & binary anyways.
