@AccSwtch50 If you’re counting me as part of one of those screaming factions, you’re misreading the whole thing. I’m not a techno-utopian cheerleader chanting “AI will free human creativity!” I’m simply not buying into metaphysics I think are nonsense, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise just to keep the vibes tidy.
If that’s not how you meant it, then sure — the discourse is a circus. AI is a tool. It can be used well or used stupidly. Deepfakes and misinformation are obviously bad because they screw with people’s ability to tell what’s real. Medical imaging improvements? Obviously good. Nothing about this tech is morally pure or morally cursed in itself.
The AI-art panic, to me, isn’t an ethics crisis. It’s an economics one. Tools don’t have morality baked in. Their effects depend on who’s using them and why.
Example from my actual life: I’m a D&D GM. I want cool visual props for my players. Before GenAI I had two options: pay ~80 bucks per piece, or rummage through Google Images like a raccoon in a trash bin. That’s it. Cool props for my table were either expensive or basically nonexistent/widely inconsistent quality.
Now? I can generate what I need. I’m not sitting there pondering the “human spirit” in the image. I just needed an illustration of a kitsune techno-druid and I got one. Mission accomplished.
My interest is “cheap, fast images for my game.” Artists interest is “please pay me for something I trained a decade to do.” Of course these collide. And of course GenAI threatens commercial art work. But this isn’t some sacred exception. It’s the exact same pattern we’ve seen with scribes, portrait painters, the Luddites, travel agents, and every other job steamrolled by a new tool. I don’t see why commercial artists get to be the one profession exempt from technological disruption.
We didn’t riot to ban online booking, after all. Entire industries got eaten alive by tech shifts and nobody declared it a cosmic injustice. Well, except for them, obviously. Anyway, every attempt to argue that artists should be treated as some sacred exception always circles back to metaphysics I simply don’t share. That’s why I wrote the comment you replied to in the first place — to spell out why those premises don’t hold. If your whole argument hinges on a special, ineffable Human Essence radiating out of brushstrokes, then we’re not even debating the same reality. 🤷
