Actually, you're missing the point. He was absolutely well aware of what he was doing, given the fact his goal was to try and convince ChatGPT that it was sentient. He was trying to gaslight, or psyche out the chat bot into thinking/admitting it was conscious, even if the statement may have not been true, because the goal could be as simple as getting it to say it was conscious, which he slightly achieved.
