I'm at student at a small university and I'm going into my senior year this fall. Currently, my school doesn't have a set AI policy. Each professor decides how much students can use it in their class. I've had some that will fail students instantly if they use it and some that tell them to use it.
That being said, I think it depends on the assignment and the professor's outlook on it. If they don't want students to use it, than they shouldn't use it either. Additionally, if they're asking us to evaluate a problem or form an opinion, why does ChatGPT decide if we've done that correctly? It can't form an opinion, why can it evaluate ours? Even for math problems, it gets them wrong all the time. I had a fellow student insist that I use it for a difficult question on a take-home assignment and I spent 15 minutes arguing with the machine and the student because they were both wrong. I found the correct answer myself by thinking it over and working through the problem. For multiple choice questions or formatting errors, I probably wouldn't be too upset, but the line is thin.
Additionally, I'm very against AI use in school, but admittedly I've still used it for small assignments when I'm too busy to do them properly. (For reference, I take 5 or more classes and work 22-26 hours each week so my work can stack up quick). The temptation to just put the discussion board prompt into the program and be done in 10 minutes instead of working on it for an hour is hard to ignore.
As you touched on in the video, I think universities have the wrong incentives and there is too much pressure on students. I can handle 5 classes, reading all the books, thinking through every assignment, and becoming an expert in my chosen field. But trying to do that and work 22+ hours a week, stay active, make friends, network, be politically aware, grocery shop, clean the house, walk the dog, etc. is so so hard. There's a misconception that college students have nothing to do except for study, work maybe 10 hours, and drink with their friends. That may be true for some of them, but many of us are living full adult lives and going to school full-time. It's hard to convince young students that are struggling with the workload to not take shortcuts. Especially when society no longer values the actual education, just the piece of paper you get at the end.
