Almost everyone was blindsided. Even the people who developed the breakthrough AI systems were surprised by how capable they were.
The engineering has gotten way ahead of the science. AI is "grown" rather than programmed, and no one on earth knows exactly why it works, why AI does one thing instead of another, or how to robustly steer it to do what we want and not do what we don't want.
