It's partly an issue of marketing, machine learning is valuable precisely because it's excellent at spotting patterns, but generative models use similar (but distinct) technological approaches to reconstruct something patterned off of its training data in a way that gets you something that is shaped right (because it's good at pattern recognition) but has no substance because in the case of art or other forms of communication, fitting a pattern is not what we want from it.
