I agree that current AI is obviously not conscious. But I do believe that conscious AI is a very real possibility in the future. We don't understand how consciousness works, but (at least to me) one of the most compelling ideas is the idea that consciousness is an emergent property of certain types of mathematical systems. Given this, why couldn't we simulate a system of the proper type on a digital computer? I'm used to hearing this sort of irrational silicon phobia from religious types, not critical thinkers and science enthusiasts.
