You don't need to know programming to be a good data scientist, but you do need to be familiar with how to change things inside a script that an engineer gives you and change parameters. Usually the engineers will give you instructions on how to change things around, or you can always ask. I do recommend learning R, Julia, or Python, because it will set you apart from others and give you a competitive advantage. Many data scientists just use ChatGPT or something similar to generate code if they need it. If you work at a smaller company, they may require you to take a course on programming fundamentals and require you to write your own scripts. Sometimes it's a requirement.
