Yes, anyone can run a model at home—but training a frontier model still takes vast infrastructure. Community mods exist—but most of the pipelines still plug into API layers from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Meta.
Corporations still shape AI narratives, policy lobbying, safety discourse, and access tiers. That’s where the real power lies.
AI may be open in code, but closed in practice. Try building something serious without GPUs, dataset access, or legal insulation. Most independent developers still orbit large players. Yes, models are available, but they rely on shared weights often trained by elite labs or corporate resources. Distribution is not democratization. Training the most powerful models requires massive capital, sustaining open models requires access to restricted data, and most innovation eventually flows through corporate APIs or infrastructure.
