If OpenAI gets what they want, it removes one of the last barriers protecting human creators. Right now, AI companies face potential lawsuits for training on copyrighted material. If that legal risk disappears, they can freely use every book, article, and story ever written to train even more sophisticated models.
This would essentially legalize the strip-mining of all human creative work to build AI systems that will then compete against the very creators whose work was used to train them. It’s like forcing blacksmiths to provide the raw materials for the machines that will replace them. So for example when Brandon says I don’t want AI to be trained on my books no matter the amount they pay me he will lose any control he has over his books and will be forced to feed his books and other authors books to any AI model legally to train them without his permission or consent unfortunately.
