@carsatcafeI get your point and I believe you. I’m in automotive development myself, not directly in autonomous driving, but I’ve studied it. Tesla has made remarkable progress, no doubt, but their failure rate is still higher than what traditional manufacturers would ever accept. Technically many features could already be deployed by other carmakers, but they hold them back because of liability and brand reputation. Tesla chose to push boundaries, but the cost is visible in accidents and even lives lost. The key difference is this: if Tesla’s system fails, the driver is responsible, if Mercedes’ Drive Pilot fails, Mercedes is responsible. That requires an entirely different level of reliability. Even a tiny gap in failure rate, say 0.01% versus 0.001%, becomes huge when scaled to millions of cars, and for a manufacturer’s reputation it is unacceptable. Most traditional OEMs will not trade safety for extra features, that’s why Mercedes delivers fewer functions but with far higher reliability, and the system hands control back to the driver well before reaching any limit. In the end it comes down to what price consumers are willing to pay, money, safety, privacy. Tesla prioritized rapid innovation, Mercedes prioritized stability and legal responsibility. Both paths are impressive but they are fundamentally different and not directly comparable. Level 3 is a massive step forward.
