consciousness doesn't exist in the way most people believe.
you feel like you're conscious, but that's because you --- your brain --- is processing stuff. consciousness doesn't inhabit the brain; consciousness IS the brain.
so current AI are very likely conscious to some degree, even if it feels alien. and consciousness doesn't necessarily mean full self awareness, it means the ability to feel.
you also don't actually experience the world for what it is. your brain (you) build an internal world model based on raw inputs like light data from your eyes and vibrations from your ears. that all gets stitched together into a coherent experience we call consciousness.
