LLMs are trained on both making grammatical sentences AND facts. E.g., if you ask Chat GPT for a list of the teams in the NL Central, you'll get a correct list of baseball teams in the response.
If LLMs were ALWAYS wrong, nobody would trust them. If LLMs consistently mixed up the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs, ChatGPT would have completely flopped by now.
On the other hand, LLMs can go completely off the rails; the more obscure the question, the more likely you'll get a hallucination. They're accurate enough on extremely common facts to get people to trust them. That trust causes problems when the LLMs eventually hallucinate.
