I don't think this is at all correct. They may not have symbolic understanding, but they do semantic. Where do you think the probabilities come from? The whole reason that they're able to parse natural language and form coherent sentences is because they **do** have a mapping of semantic relationships, that's the whole point of what happens during training of a model: it is building that vector map. Mapping of semantic relationships is exactly how they **do** work. So much so, that the way AI can retrieve information from a database, that separates it from traditional search methods, is literally called 'semantic search'. Even going back long before LLMs, the big breakthru that happened in neural network based machine learning was making a model that learned the 'concept' of a cat, meaning it was able to generalize outside of its training data and recognize *any* image of a cat, rather than only the specific cat images in its training data. So, yes, they have both the ability to conceptualize AND a mapping of relationships between those concepts.
