Saying social media addiction is just about personal responsibility doesn’t really hold up. We’ve seen this before. Tobacco companies said the same thing while actively making cigarettes more addictive and marketing to children, yes they had cigarette mascots go to schools to tell them how awesome smoking was.
Social media isn’t much different. These platforms are designed to keep you on them as long as possible—endless scrolling, algorithm feeds, constant notifications. That’s not by accident. It’s built to hook you.
Yeah, personal responsibility matters. But it’s not a fair fight when the product is literally engineered to keep your attention.
At some point, it becomes less a personal issue and starts being a regulatory one. We already went through this with tobacco. Social media 10 years ago wasn’t so corrosive to the mind and society.
