The point of "I want to believe!" isn't that reasoning about the future is bad (otherwise we wouldn't believe in climate change). It's that not being able to explain something is the default state, and so an all-fitting solution like "aliens" can and will be slotted in more times than it will actually be correct. So we should just chill out and wait for the scientists to evaluate what's going on.
I don't really see the comparison between this and AI panic about the future. "This technology will kill everyone" isn't all-fitting; really it's only been vaguely plausible a few times before, and in those cases scientists did slow down and make sure it wouldn't do that before continuing. We calculated whether nukes would burn the atmosphere, we performed increasingly larger-scale trials on mRNA vaccines while having an understanding of the underlying mechanisms.
