I don't know what you think intelligence is, but in almost every way we have to measure these concepts, LLMs are intelligent reasoners that understand things.
They are fundamentally alien, yes. That does not mean that they can't actually do what you can see for yourself that they can actually do.
If these specific words bother you, ask yourself this question: can a submarine swim? Can planes actually fly, if they don't flap their wings? Obviously what we should care about is capabilities, not semantics.
