from what I understand
larger ai models are trained off of enormous pools of data and usually fine-tuned with a bunch of parameters to make them usable in as many general cases as possible, but as a result they're not good at very specific things (like asking an llm about some well-known scientific facts might result in it retrieving correct information, but if you ask it about more obscure or recent studies it's much more likely to come up with unreliable information)
what a lora does is tweak some of these parameters in order to better suit the user's needs which allows people to take a model trained and tuned for general use and, with very little effort or adjustment, tune it to their specific use case (in this example it'd be taking a model designed to generate images and altering the parameters to focus on specific parts of the image to result in a different style being reproduced)
tldr a lora is an attachment someone can add to a general-purpose model to make it work better in a set of specific cases
