The pro-AI acceleration crew has no case. I've read all of the prominent ones. The important point is that power does not need to persuade. Power does what it wishes, and, since it's far from omniscient, power often self-destructs. Think of all the wars lost by the powers that started the wars. Often the case for war was terrible, but the powers did it anyway and paid the price for defeat. The problem now is that a hard fail on AI means we all go down to the worst sort of defeat, the genocidal sort, such as Athens famously inflicted upon Melos.
