Automation could be used as a back up and improved safety for human drivers rather than a replacement. I'm a short person and have a blind spot monitor on my car (one of the main reasons I got the car). I still look as carefully as I can, but the BSM has stopped me from changing to the right lane a number of times when the car coming up on my right was in that invisible spot.
