I think I read somewhere that there is no time of greater danger in a woman's life than when she is pregnant. Certainly in the past before modern medical advances, pregnancy carried serious risks to the mother's health and life. But also, pregnancy could often trigger the woman's murder, especially in previous eras when a child born out of wedlock or a child born in a marriage but to a different father (especially where it would become obvious because the father is of a different ethnicity or race to the husband) would be a scandalous disgrace.
